I suspect there are Linux alternatives for this that'll work just fine and give you much less grief. That was in UBuntu 12.10 or 13.04 or something like that, and that WAS necessary. The last thing I installed via building and compiling from a tarball was a backported wireless driver for my netbook. It's just not going to be well supported for Linux. And if the developers of a Linux program can't even come up with a stable ppa or at least a nice. I avoiid them mostly because Mint is Ubuntu based, and Ubuntu has the largest user base of any Linux distro, by a large margin, period. It's generally recommended that Linux beginners avoid installing from tar.gz files, for a number of reasons.
